My imqhotbqh on Dead Cells

Had the game in my library since September last year, gifted for my birthday, but was waiting for release since then, didn’t want to ruin my experience with Early Access, even though it was a pretty good EA apparently. Now game is out and it’s time to play full release version finally.

Main inputs: absolutely no clue what was in Early Access version and what was added in release version, so nothing to compare and nothing to say about that step in game’s “evolution”, really limited experience with platforming and side-scrolling games, metroidvanias etc, not a huge fan of genre. Not really interested in games like these in general, with some pretty rare exceptions that i still need to play like Salt & Sanctuary, Hollow Knight and upcoming Death’s Gambit.

First of all, based on my experience with platformers, i was scared that i won’t like the game and that i will suck at it. Well, i sure suck at it quite a bit, but i’m actually liking it so far to the point i was wanting to play it all evening while watching Ela playing it, but i resisted it.

Main thing that i like is how smooth everything feels in this game, moving and fighting is so fluid that i actually want to go fast usually, probably why i started trying to go as fast as possible for time locked doors and cells farm, it just feels good being fast here.

Roguelike part also is pretty nice and dying doesn’t feel that bad here, i have sorta Darkest Dungeon vibes here, i’m actually enjoying just git gud and farm process a lot, dying and losing progress doesn’t feel that disastrous and sad, sometimes a bit salty when it’s due to some dumb shit (like Windows’s “sticky keys” feature tabbing me from the game in the clip).

Replayability already feels pretty good, can’t tell how it will be in a long run, but should be decent, not to mention devs will probably put bigger priority on adding new content and items in game now that it’s out now in finished state.

Art and music are amazing, actually great graphics and music isn’t getting annoying (not yet at least), but can’t really say anything about lore, wasn’t really paying attention to it much yet.

Platforming itself is pretty good, but yeah, that’s the part i’m the worst at, but getting better, i hope at least. All the tools for getting in new places that you slowly unlock, double and triple jumps etc are here and most importantly dodge, that makes combat feel better for me. Just have to git gud at platforming and i will be completely happy.

From streaming perspective game is pretty good too, provides some moments to take a break or to quickly shift attention to chat sometimes, but also keeps you involved and focused enough to forget about time, so you don’t even notice that it’s about time to stop streaming. Pretty interesting game to watch too, from my perspective as a viewer and from feedback, even my shitty plays were entertaining enough for people, so that is also a nice thing about this game, pretty good to diversify my content with something fast and action-packed after slow chill strategy streams that i do a lot.

So overall if game wasn’t gifted to me, i’d buy it now without doubts, but thanks Luna for gifting it to me. Gonna play it for some time for sure and think going back to it later, especially after some content updates, will be pretty nice.
